Do pilots eat during the flight?

The simple answer is: yes, pilots are humans too and like everybody else they need food to refuel; however, there are interesting aspects to eating as a pilot that we’ll explore in this blog.

Can pilots eat while flying?

Yes, pilots eat while flying, but they do not eat simultaneously during the flight or being in full control of the plane.

Pilots will commonly eat their food when the plane is on autopilot or when they’re flying at cruise altitude (33,000 to 42,000 ft.).

A pilot will take a short break and let another pilot be in control of the plane while they take some time to eat their food.

Depending on the type of the plane, there could be a fold-out table for the pilots so that they wouldn’t have to put the plates on their lap. In facts, planes like Airbus are very crew friendly since they offer good rest areas for long-haul flights, with two bunks behind the flight deck above the front galley for the pilots and six large bunks access via the rear galley above the rear of the Economy cabin.

What Do Pilots Eat

Most decent airlines offer free food for their pilots. In some airline, the food prepared for the crew is entirely different from that of the passengers, to avoid malnutrition or giving repetitive food to the crew; At some airlines, the captain or the main pilot will be entitled to the first class menu and then their co-pilot will be entitled to the business class menu and so on. Of course the pilots can bring their own food too, a trend that is more common among seasoned pilots who are already tired of the flavorless plane food!

There is an important safety and sanitary caution regarding pilots’ meals: to reduce the risk of food poisoning, pilots are not allowed to choose the same meal. So for example, in the case of a long flight where pilots usually have two meal breaks, there must be four different meals available. In case both pilots opt for the same option on the menu, it is up to the captain as the Commander to allow or refuse it.
